Being Found by AI Search: How Assistants Choose Which Businesses to Mention

More and more searches no longer end in a list of ten links. People ask an assistant a full question and get an answer with a few names in it. For a business the question becomes: what makes an assistant mention you? AI search visibility is less mysterious than it sounds.

Assistants read what is published

An assistant has no secret list of good businesses. It works from what it can read: your website, your business profiles, reviews, directories, articles that mention you. If these are thin or contradict each other, it has little to say about you and a reason to prefer someone clearer.

Say plainly what you do

Pages that state facts in simple sentences are easy to quote. Each service page should say what the service is, who it is for, where you offer it, and what it costs or depends on. This is the same advice as for service pages that rank, and it matters even more when a machine has to summarise you in one line.

Keep your details the same everywhere

Name, address, phone, opening hours and the list of services should match on your site, your Google Business Profile and every directory. When they differ, an assistant cannot tell which is true, and may leave you out.

Answer real questions

Assistants are asked questions, so pages that answer questions get used. A short question-and-answer section on each service page, written in the words customers use, is one of the most useful things you can add.

Reviews carry weight

Recommendations lean on what other people said. A steady flow of honest reviews, with your answers, tells an assistant the same thing it tells a person. If you need a routine for that, see how to get more Google reviews.

Let the machines in

Check that your site does not block the crawlers of AI services by accident, and that the important content is in the page itself, not only inside images or scripts.

What not to expect

Nobody can promise a place in an assistant's answer, just as nobody can promise first place on Google. What you can do is be the easiest business to describe correctly.

Questions and answers

Is this a replacement for SEO?

No. It rests on the same foundations: clear pages, consistent details and real reviews. Good SEO work already does most of it.

Can I see what an assistant says about my business?

Yes. Ask a few assistants the questions your customers would ask, and note what they get right, wrong or leave out.
